A vegan and gluten free lunch at Gys

Having lived in Utrecht for 2 and a half years now it’s actually surprising how little I know of the restaurants and eating places here. I never used to go out for lunch, brunch or dinner. Plus I’m vegan so not every place would be as nice for me as it would for somebody else.

This year I’m slowly starting to find a few places to eat as I’m going out to lunch more with my friends. One place I went to lunch with, twice, is Gys.

This is not sponsored, I just loved it there so I wanted to tell you guys about it.

Gys has two restaurants here in Utrecht with almost completely different menus. So apart from the sphere – which is exactly the same in both, cosy – it’s like you’re going to a new restaurant with new choices completely.

As you walk in the one on the Amsterdamsestraatweg, it immediately gives out a very nice, cosy, laid back vibe. It’s all very rustic but very well taken care of. It’s quite big and the perfect place to grab some brunch, just some coffee or take your laptop and you can work there too. I’m yet to try that but I think it would be a great coffeeshop to bring your work to as the coffee’s are amazing, they even have plant based milk! That just sold it for me.

The staff are amazing and super friendly. There’s even a board game closet in one side of the shop. My friend and I played memory and a card game after lunch which was so much fun.

Now onto the food. Which is obviously what you go there for.

My friend has a gluten allergy and obviously I’m vegan. They had so much choice for us. In any other restaurant we would choose very quickly because there’s normally just one or two options for the both of us. Here, half the menu or maybe even more was available for us to eat. Needless to say it took us a while to choose what we wanted.

In the end she went for sweet potato with loads of yummy vegies. I went for a kapsalon, which I was so impressed by I talked about in my favourites from the week a couple of weeks ago.

As a dessert I couldn’t pass up the fact that every single one was vegan! That never happens except for at a completely vegan restaurant. I went for the speculaas brownie with caramel coffee saus. That was the most delicious brownie I ever had and now I’m bound to try the other desserts to see if their as good.

Whilst we were there I snapped up some photos because I thought the place looked super cute. I also snapped up a photo for the gram because those flowers were just the perfect shot. You could say, it’s a very instagrammable place which I think they’ve done very smart as a lot of people are now looking for that perfect shot.

I would love to go back there, sooner rather than later, and I’m sure I definitely will. If ever have a vegan friend come over I will be sure to take them here as I’m sure they’re gonna love it as much as I did.

Have you ever been to Gys? Would you go?
