One of my new year’s resolutions was to put more effort into my fashion. I found myself constantly wearing the same kind of thing (jeans with a sweater) and frankly I was getting quite sick of it. It’s nice to look nice and I absolutely love fashion so I wanted to put a little more effort into how I look everyday.
I am glad to say that it has worked out quite well so far. Not to say I never wear jeans and a sweater anymore but I put more thought into what I’m going to wear in the morning, leading to better picked out outfits leading to a happier Sarah. So here’s how I’m putting more effort into my style this year – and many more years to come.
Think before I buy
It’s so easy to grab something from the rack or add something to your basket real quick because your in love with the first sight of a piece you’ve seen. I used to do that all to often which eventually led to my closet being full of clothes but me not liking anything aka the dilemma of having “nothing to wear”.
Now, whenever I go to a store – aka Primark because that’s the only non-online store I shop at nowadays – if I like something I will think of how I could wear it and if I would actually really wear it. Then in the fitting room there would be a second round of critique to see if I think it suits me. And then I will only buy something if I’m truly in love with it. Always remembering Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side when she says: “if you don’t love it in the store, you won’t wear it at home”.
Then for online shopping – aka ASOS which is the only place I shop online nowadays because of their GREAT return policy – I will put things in my wish list on shoptagr and then if after a couple of days or weeks or months even I am looking to get some new bits I will look on my wish list and then if I actually still want it then I will get it, ’cause I sure as hell thought about it long enough.
Dress for the weather
This may sound strange because who doesn’t dress for the weather? What I mean is, that since living in Holland I’ve always thought of this country as a very cold one, having lived in a very hot climate all my life I have still been adjusting to the fact that Holland can in fact also get warm in Spring and Summer. So not dressing like its always 5 degrees outside is what I mean by dressing for the weather.
There are just some outfits that look so much better without a jacket for example, or with shorts instead of long jeans. Often I will refrain from wearing the ‘warm weather outfit’ in fear of it still being too cold, but after two years of living here I’ve finally realised that Spain isn’t the only place that can get hot, and I often really don’t need that extra jacket.
Invest in trousers, other than jeans
As I said in my intro for a long time I had only been wearing jeans and a sweater, or jeans and a t-shirt and a cardigan, or jeans and anything for that matter. I never really looked into other types of trousers, not even other types of jeans, always been a regular skinny kind of gal.
Well I have completely changed my mind and can’t get enough of anything other than jeans. Culottes, regular trousers, jumpsuits or even mom jeans, I am obsessed with them all and they really broaden your horizon on so many other outfit options I can put together with all my other clothes. Truthfully, I haven’t bought new jeans in ages but I’m always looking for some other kind of pair of trousers.
Jumpsuits and playsuits is where it’s at
As much as I’m trying to put more effort into my style, I don’t feel like picking out an outfit every single day. That’s where jumpsuits and playsuits come into play (pun not intended). They are super easy to throw on, with the right shoes and a nice jacket it looks like you made such a big effort but really you just put this together in no time.
If I’m feeling extra glamorous I will also pick out some jewellery, but normally it’s not even needed to look more than decent.
Expanding my shoe collection
For the longest time I’ve only really had my Nike Air Max to walk on, or at least I only ever put those on as some of my other shoes were hidden away at the back of my closet. Recently I had been looking for white embroided shoes, when I had been looking for ages but didn’t find any I settled for normal white shoes (still looking for those embroided ones though if you know of any nice ones).
The addition of a new pair of shoes in the family was just what I needed to change my outfits around a bit. I dug those other shoes out of the closet and now I actually have options when choosing an outfit! Particularly those white shoes have been great as I was really missing some because wearing the same black sneakers – even though they are amazing and my favourite shoes ever – all the time just gets a little boring.
