It was… for a while. But I soon realised my life is definitely not that exciting week to week so after 13 weeks I decided that it wasn’t bringing me joy anymore so I stopped.
I did still want to write up some kind of monthly round up but didn’t want to do the typical “everything that happened in *month*” or “5 things I did in *month*”. Although I love reading those posts, I know I personally will get bored of writing them eventually. I know this because when I first started blogging I tried this and I stopped after a few months (and later I started my 10 favourites of the week series).
So eventually I came up with the idea of sharing what I’ve been reading, watching and listening to over the month (original, I know, definitely buying the patent on that one!). Funnily enough, I was just writing a sentence saying how I would do what I’m listening to as well but since I always listen to the same music or no music at all I actually wouldn’t. Then it dawned on me that I can talk about the podcasts I’ve been listening to every month! I listen to podcasts daily, so hopefully I can give you some suggestions every month (and try not to repeat myself too much). And maybe occasionally I *might* throw in a song here and there if I’ve been really passionate about one, but don’t expect too much.
Reading will include all the books I’ve finished – so not the books I started that mont or not yet finished, I have to give myself some structure – plus all the online articles and blog posts that I’ve been loving.
Watching will include all the series I’ve been watching on Netflix plus all the movies I’ve watched that month!
So here’s to the first instalment of what I’ve been reading, watching and listening to in the month of July
There’s only one book I managed to finish this month, but boy was it a good one. It made me cry, laugh and got me so fascinated by a lifestyle that is so completely different to mine. Can you guess which book is it yet? Everything I know about love by Dolly Alderton.
The first time I saw this book passing through the internet it didn’t appeal to me in the slightest, just because I’m not a memoir kind of girl, or so I thought. This book follows Dolly’s love life from the very beginning, in primary school to where she is now. She looks at all different kinds of aspect of love, love in relationships, in friendships, with strangers, one-night stands, unconditional love, conditional love. She talks about her experiences so beautifully and she’s so open to her readers and that’s what makes this book so appealing.
I’d definitely recommend this book, even if you think you don’t like memoirs – I didn’t, they might put you on them. I definitely want to read some more of that genre now!
Online articles and blog posts
Before I decided to write these monthly posts I knew I wanted a way to share the favourite blog posts I’ve been reading, so I’ve done that twice now on my twitter account. So this month this list isn’t too long but if you fancy a read definitely go check out my threads or have a nosey in my archives!
- Even though I’m not a mum nor pregnant nor do I want children, I do love reading Hannah Gale’s parenting blog posts. Her most recent one was her breastfeeding story
- There has been much talk going around recently on blogging being a dying industry. I absolutely wholeheartedly disagree with that as how can an industry that is still so young already be dying? Imii put almost my exact thoughts on paper (or online) on why she thinks this is definitely not the case
- A letter to my 13-year-old self by the lovely Charlotte who I’ve also been working with for my blog was so beautiful to read
- I always get super excited when I see Chloe posted something new. She hit the nail right in the head in one of her latests talking about the ‘friend schedule’ that suddenly occurs when you enter into adulthood and how the hell are we supposed to deal with it?
My boyfriend had started watching Orange is the new black a couple of months ago. I watched the first three seasons and a little bit of the fourth last year before just being put off it during the summer. Now that he’s been watching it though it’s made me want to watch it again too. So I did. I just finished the fourth season and omg how sad! I seriously do not have the words. They just released the 6th season as well so there’s still plenty more for me to watch
For non-fiction I have been watching Queer Eye! I know you’re probably gasping on how I didn’t watch this immediately when it came out and the only answer I have to that is that I didn’t really feel like it I guess. But now I’m here and I’m loving it! The fab 5 are so amazing with everything they do. I’ve said it before but they don’t just transform someone willy nilly, they listen to that someone, they look at what they like, what they want and what they need and they do something with that. Always taking them in consideration, which sounds silly because you would think it’s about them but so often in these kinds of “transformation” shows the “transformers” just do whatever they think is nice or whatever the “trend” is without really listening to what the actual person wants.
I have been to the cinema a fair few times this month, haven’t beaten my record of last July though where I went to the cinema a flippin 8 times, but I’ve come close enough.
The cinema really close to me have an outdoor cinema on their rooftop in the summer, where you can watch the movie under the stars. I watched Demain tout commence there – for the second time – and it was as good as the last time, also made me cry as much as the last time even though I already knew what was going to happen. Apart from that I also watched Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the second time this month, I saw it in June with my boyfriend and a friend and this month my sister wanted to watch it with me. I couldn’t comment too much on if it was actually a good film but I did enjoy watching it a lot.
One film I can comment on how good it is is Love, Simon! I have been waiting for this film for absolutely ages. I say Tyler Oakley watch this movie so long ago I think it might have even been last year, he might have seen it before it came out to be fair but ever since then I’ve been wanting to see it so badly. So when I finally did this month I was glad that it definitely did not disappoint. I am thinking of reading the book now as well, have any of you read it and would you recommend it?
The only film I haven’t watched in the cinema this month is 8 mile. 8 mile loosely follows the story of the rapper Eminem, emphasis on loosely. Originally I thought this was a documentary film about his life but it turns out it’s not. I decided to put this on one morning when I wasn’t feeling so well and I did actually like it, the movie pleasantly surprised me.
The last two movies are an animation and a musical. Can you guess which they are? Incredibles 2 and Mamma Mia! Here we go again of course! Ever since I found The Super Carlin Brothers on YouTube I have become obsessed with Pixar so of course I had to go watch incredibles 2 when it came out. I didn’t remember much of the first movie but I’d watched enough of The Super Carlin Brother’s videos to be able to piece everything together. Overall I thought the film was awesome and I really hope there’s a third one soon and not in about 50 years time. Mamma Mia was obviously also amazing! It wasn’t so good as the first one (but how could you possibly expect that?) but it was still really good. I loved Cher playing the grandma but I was a little disappointed they didn’t keep Meryl Streep in.
There have been quite a few new podcasts coming out this month. I will talk about one of them this month plus two other podcasts I’ve been listening to all the time and then the other new ones will get a place next month if not this is just going to be a never ending post.
So the first podcast that I just have to mention is of course, the love island morning after podcast. I am cheating a little here because I’ve been listening to this from the very beginning of this season of love island but I just couldn’t talk about podcasts in my first instalment of this series and not talk about the love island podcast. I absolutely love listening to Arielle and Kem (when he’s there) every morning. I kinda wanted them to do a podcast after the weekly hotlist on Saturday as well just to have another episode! Speaking of Love Island, this is not the only podcast related to the series I’ve been listening to. Where the official love island podcast just mainly talks bout the events and narrative of what’s been going on in the villa, undercover lover, the unofficial love island podcast, dissects the narrative and the events that have been going on and have a lot of discussions on different (very important) topics that love island is bringing up!
On a completely unrelated note, one of the new podcast that has been landing in my phone every week is by Jen Carrington and Sara Tasker. It’s called letters from a hopeful creative, every episode they answer one letter from a listener with a question which then becomes kind of the topic they talk about that week. They’ve already done some on Instagram, the comparison trap and running a business whilst living with a chronic illness. I have loved every single episode so far and can’t wait for what more they have to offer.
